What the audition
asks of you

Two contrasting selections, all memorized. A short sight-reading exercise that cannot count against you. And a conversation.

Requirements

Three parts

  1. Two contrasting songs

Both must be memorized. Choose two selections from different categories below so the panel hears contrast.

    • Musical theater standards
    • Art song in French, Italian or German
    • Gospel repertoire that demonstrates your mastery of the genre
    • R&B repertoire that fits your range and vocal ability
  2. Sight reading

Two short passages, given to you at the audition.

    • A rhythmic passage, four to eight measures in simple quadruple meter
    • A melodic passage, four to eight measures in C, F or G

This is not a pass/fail process and does not count against your score. It tells the director where to start with you, not whether to take you.

  3. Interview

A short conversation with the Director of Choral Activities. The questions are published below — there is nothing to catch you out.

The interview

Four questions you already know

These are the questions. Think about them beforehand and the conversation will be a good one.

  1. Why did you choose Johnson C. Smith University?
  2. What interested you in the choral program?
  3. What do you hope to gain?
  4. What strengths do you bring — musical and otherwise?
